B, P & M of BPM

When it comes to starting an initiative that involves all shapes, styles & kinds of brains in an organization, it calls for a challenge. For the brave – I’d say it’s an opportunity. To add more to this natural complexity, you can add a dose of misconception, resistance & of course internal politics. Now imagine yourself at the centre stage of all of this; trying to lead a BPM initiative.

It is not as intimidating as it may seem. There are always simple solutions to complex problems and so is in this case as well. In fact, when it comes to BPM, the keys to the solution lie in B, P & M of BPM. Following steps can be used by BPM initiative leaders to run these initiatives.

Build the strategy

Pilot series of BPM projects iteratively

Marry the business & technology forever

Build the strategy:

No one size fits all (especially BPM). Keep one thing in mind; BPM has evolved into its wonderful current state not just because great IT minds came together and thought of building BPM system one fine day; on the contrary it was the business-side who drove this evolution to propulsion. To build a strategy, it is just a matter of discovering who wants what, as different people & departments may have different pain points and different expectations. Discovery of all these attributes will assist you in building a good BPM implementation strategy. Based on your findings, you may introduce different BPM components to different departments so that they realize faster return on their investment of money as well as time.

Pilot series of BPM projects iteratively:

Once you have discovered all the needs; create & prioritize the list of small BPM projects that can be floated as pilot projects within the respective user base. It is important at this point to create need specific segmentation to group various projects. E.g. create a segment of all the projects where the needs are around Business Process Analysis or Business Process Automation & Reporting or Cohesive Integration. This kind of segmentation will allow you to run BPM-area-specific focused teams and help you build a strong Center of Excellence from the overall BPM initiative perspective. Users will be happy because they will get what they wanted and you will be happy because you will be equipped with these focused teams that can address any BPM need in the future.

Marry the business & technology forever:

Rolling out the pilots will ensure that users get what they want. After the pilot implementations, it is time to penetrate the best-practices learnt from all the pilot projects, to all the groups. This is where you will be taking your existing BPM implementation to the next level of maturity. Keep releasing solution enablers to have users engaged and interested not just in using the BPM system but helping them evolve it to next level, to meet their next set of challenges.
